Dry Ice Safety & Disposal

Why do you use dry ice in shipments?

Dry ice maintains an extremely cold temperature of -109.3°F (-78.5°C), which keeps your premium meats frozen solid throughout shipping. This ensures products arrive in perfect condition with maximum quality, freshness, and food safety maintained from our facility to your door, regardless of transit time or external temperatures.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: How do I safely handle dry ice?

CRITICAL SAFETY WARNINGS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

  • NEVER touch dry ice with bare hands - Always use insulated gloves, oven mitts, or a thick towel. Direct skin contact causes severe frostbite and cold burns within seconds.
  • ALWAYS open packages in well-ventilated areas - Dry ice releases carbon dioxide (CO2) gas as it sublimates. Never open in small, enclosed spaces like closets or cars.
  • Keep away from children and pets - Store dry ice in a safe location that is completely inaccessible to children and animals.
  • NEVER store in airtight containers - Do not seal dry ice in glass jars, plastic containers with tight lids, or coolers with latched lids. Expanding CO2 gas creates dangerous pressure that can cause explosions.
  • Do not inhale vapors directly - While the visible "smoke" is harmless water vapor, the area immediately around dry ice has high CO2 concentration which can cause dizziness, headaches, or difficulty breathing.
  • Never leave in enclosed vehicles or small rooms - CO2 buildup in confined spaces can displace oxygen and create a hazardous environment.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation at all times - Open windows or doors when handling dry ice indoors.

What should I do when my order arrives?

Step-by-step upon delivery:

  1. Open the package in a well-ventilated area - Garage with door open, outdoor space, or room with windows open
  2. Put on protective gloves - Use oven mitts, insulated gloves, or wrap hands in a thick towel before touching anything
  3. Remove your vacuum-sealed products - Handle only the product packages, not the dry ice
  4. Immediately transfer products to your freezer - Do not leave frozen items at room temperature
  5. Leave dry ice in the box - Do not attempt to move or handle the dry ice directly
  6. Place the box in a safe, ventilated area - Away from children, pets, and living spaces
  7. Allow dry ice to sublimate naturally - This typically takes 18-24 hours

How do I properly dispose of dry ice?

SAFE DISPOSAL PROCEDURES:

  • Let it sublimate (evaporate) naturally - This is the ONLY safe disposal method. Place the shipping box or dry ice in a well-ventilated area such as:
    • Garage with door open
    • Outdoor area away from foot traffic
    • Room with multiple windows open
    • Covered porch or patio with airflow
  • NEVER dispose in sinks, toilets, or drains - The extreme cold (-109°F) will crack pipes, damage plumbing, and cause costly repairs
  • NEVER throw in garbage bins or dumpsters - Sanitation workers can be injured, and gas buildup in enclosed trash containers is hazardous
  • NEVER bury or place in soil - Can damage plant roots and create underground gas pockets
  • Leave in original insulated packaging - The shipping box slows sublimation and contains the dry ice safely. You can also wrap in newspaper for additional insulation
  • Maintain continuous ventilation - Ensure the disposal area has constant airflow so CO2 gas disperses safely without accumulating
  • Keep disposal area off-limits - Mark or block the area to prevent children, pets, or others from accessing it during sublimation
  • Allow 18-24 hours for complete sublimation - Larger amounts may take longer. Check periodically (with gloves) until completely gone

How long does dry ice last?

In our insulated shipping boxes, dry ice typically lasts 24-48 hours, which is sufficient for transit. Once you open the package and expose it to room temperature air, remaining dry ice will sublimate within 18-24 hours depending on the amount and ventilation.

Is dry ice dangerous?

Dry ice is safe when handled properly following basic safety precautions. It is FDA-approved for direct contact with food and is widely used throughout the food industry for shipping perishables. The key to safety is following guidelines: always use hand protection, ensure proper ventilation, never seal in airtight containers, and allow safe sublimation in open areas. Millions of food shipments use dry ice safely every day.

What are the signs of CO2 exposure?

In poorly ventilated areas, excessive CO2 can cause headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, or confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms when handling dry ice, immediately move to fresh air and ensure the area is well-ventilated. Serious exposure is rare and easily prevented with proper ventilation.

What if I have concerns about handling dry ice?

If you have specific concerns about dry ice, health conditions that make handling difficult, or need alternative shipping arrangements, please contact us before placing your order. We're happy to discuss your concerns and find solutions. Your safety and peace of mind are our top priorities.

Can I reuse dry ice for other purposes?

While dry ice can be used for various purposes (cooling, special effects, etc.), we recommend allowing it to sublimate naturally unless you are experienced in dry ice handling and have proper safety equipment and ventilation. Never experiment with dry ice in enclosed spaces or without proper protective equipment.
